Jewelry adds a touch of uniqueness and personal style to any outfit, but it's important to know when to take it off to preserve its beauty and longevity. One of the key times to do this is before you dive into the pool or ocean. Here are some reasons why wearing jewelry in salt water or pool water might not be the best idea:

Discoloration of Metals
Most metals can discolor when exposed to chlorinated pool water or salt water. However, there are a few exceptions that are more resistant:
- Titanium
- Platinum
- Palladium
- Tungsten
- 18K gold and above
- Niobium

Erosion of Prongs and Settings
The prongs that hold stones in place can erode if you regularly wear your jewelry in water. This isn't just limited to pool or ocean water; even tap and bath water, which often contain chlorine, can cause damage over time. If you never take off your jewelry and frequently expose it to water, it's only a matter of time before the prongs give way, risking the loss of your precious stones.

Increased Risk of Losing Jewelry
Water, especially cold water, can cause your fingers to shrink, increasing the risk of rings slipping off and getting lost. Many people have lost valuable pieces this way. Consider if it's really worth the risk of losing your cherished jewelry by wearing it in the water.

What About Permanent Jewelry?
Permanent bracelets and other jewelry are designed to be worn all the time, including in water. However, it's essential to understand the risks involved. I love my permanent bracelets and wear them all the time. I have pieces made of sterling silver, 14kt yellow gold, 14kt rose gold, and 14kt gold-filled, and they have all managed to hold up well without tarnishing. However, I do assume the risk of potentially losing them or having them tarnish over time, and I'm okay with that. I polish them regularly and inspect the chains to ensure the links are still secure. Sterling silver and solid gold will revert back to its original metal state once polished.

By being mindful of these risks, you can make informed decisions about when to wear your jewelry and how to take care of it. Remember, preserving your jewelry's beauty and integrity ensures it can be enjoyed for years to come.
